16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute coordinated by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership in 1991. Participants chose the dates November 25- International Day Against Violence Against Women- and December 10- International Human Rights Dayin order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a violation of human rights. This 16-day period also highlights other significant dates including November 29, International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, December 1, World AIDS Day, and December 6, which marks the Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.


On this occasion, YUWA is partnering with US Embassy in Kathmandu to celebrate the Campaign. YUWA will be doing the following activities during the campaign.
Prarambha: This 1 day long workshop will be conducted in Baneshwor Campus, Shantinagar, Kathmandu on November 26. There will be around 20-25 participants. The graduates of the workshop will carry out a small social engagement project on the theme of actions against Gender Based Violence. Furthermore, these young graduates will be the active during the entire 16 days long campaigns as well.
Painting Competition: This painting competition will be organized among the teams of a minimum of 10 schools of Kathmandu valley. The competition will be held at D.A.V. Sushil Kedia Vishwa Bharati Higher Secondary School, Jawalakhel, Lalitpur on November 28 . Each team will have 3 members and each team will develop a painting in a given period of time at a particular venue.
The paintings done will be put on public display on the street performance that is scheduled to happen on December 4 at Bhaktapur Durbar Square. The winners of the competition can be awarded at the end of the same day’s program.




Wall Painting: The wall painting will be done on December 1, which is also World AIDS Day. It would be a great way to mark this day as well as the campaign against Gender Based Violence. The program will be conducted with the help of local Visual/Street Artists in a proper venue.
Puppet Show:  The puppet show will be done on December 4 at Bhaktapur Durbar Square along with the performance by Deepak Raj Giri and Nepal Break Dance Foundation. A team of performers will conduct the show.
 Panel Discussion: The panel discussion will be held at The Bakery Cafe, Sundhara, Kathmandu at 2-4 PM on December 5 on the occasion of Volunteers day. Speakers from national and international volunteer organization, member from the drafting committee of national volunteerism policy, young volunteers and around 50 young people will meet together to discuss on the importance of volunteerism.                                                                                                                                     
SMS Campaign: The SMS Campaign will be conducted throughout the campaign. A SMS will be composed with the message related to Gender Based Violence and will be sent out to a large number of people.
